This post is about the second half of the Interpreter chapter in Pilgrim’s Progress (see previous posts). In it, the interpreter shows Christian another vision.
This vision is of a man in a cage, weeping. He is called Despair. He represents the one who used to follow God and thought himself a believer, but has fallen into anguish and believes there is no hope for himself.
Christian is, understandably, disturbed, and the Interpreter takes him away to yet another vision.
This one depicts a man rising from his bed. He is terrified because he had been dreaming about the Last Judgement. The man was not saved, so therefore abandoned by the angels and fallen into the pit.
After encouraging Christian to continue his journey, the Interpreter leaves. Christian heads out on the next leg of his adventure.
These visions can be disturbing, and I don’t particularly enjoy thinking about them.
But they’re important. They’re true.
- The man Despair is a good warning to us to never abandon the Word of God. He shows what true hopelessness can look like.
- And the man who woke up, terrified because he was cast into hell because he did not believe. This can help us understand what will happen to people if we don’t share God’s message with them.
Today’s post was short, but I hope you were able to learn something and enjoy my insight…see you next time! Until then, happy reading:)
