THE HOBBIT

·

you’ve heard all about Lord of the Rings from me…but what about a time before Frodo and Aragorn, before all those wars?

what about The Hobbit?

the original book of the Hobbit is really long, so they film makers split it into three full-length movies, the first called ‘An Unexpected Journey’.

Guests, if You Can Call Them That…

The movie starts out with introducing the Shire, and Bilbo Baggins (who happens to be Frodo’s uncle, but Frodo isn’t alive yet, so…anyways).

Gandalf greets Bilbo and, when Bilbo isn’t looking, marks his door so that some special visitors (more on them in a sec) know which Hobbit Hole to go in.

That night, a company of dwarfs come barging into Bilbo’s peaceful home, drinking up his beer and making a mess of the food. Gandalf is there, too, and he sits pleasantly at the table.

They explain that they need Bilbo’s help. There’s buried treasure that belongs to the dwarfs, guarded by a dragon, and the only way to get it is to have a Burglar.

Bilbo, with his big silent hobbit feet, is the perfect choice.

“I’m Going on an Adventure!”

It takes some convincing. At one point, the company of dwarfs almost leaves without Bilbo. But eventually he joins up with them and they set out on their journey.

A journey that is pretty rough. They almost die on a number of occasions narrowly avoiding:

  • being eaten by trolls
  • torture from goblins
  • losing in a game to Gollum, in Bilbo’s case
  • getting maimed by orcs
  • burning up in a forest fire

The Worst is Behind

However, they manage to recollect themselves on a rock, the sun setting in the west, weary but triumphant. Bilbo suggests that, “…the worst is behind us,” and, caught up in a hopeful moment, the others agree.

That was only the first half of their adventure, though, so stay tuned for part two of the Hobbit!!

New Faces

Obviously, there are new characters in the Hobbit, a lot of them being dwarfs. My favorites from this movie?

Let’s start with the expected one: Bilbo.

He’s tiny, and funny, and practical. What’s not to love?

I admire the way he took up the challenge of being a Burglar for the dwarfs, not knowing what to expect, but willing to try. Definitely like him more than Frodo.

Thorin Oakensheild!!

He’s one of my favorites in the whole entire world of lotr, I don’t know why.

His back story is crazy. His whole motive for finding the treasure is like to regain his father’s legacy, and it’s pretty awesome.

His character is also cool, literally. He’s very reserved, taciturn, but has this strength that all the other dwarfs look up to.

The actor that plays him is one of my favorites, and he’s in the Robin Hood series as well. I like him for that, too, I suppose.

Anyways, I really, really loved the Hobbit movie so far and definitely recommend it!! It’s an intense, stirring film that’s at the top of my favorite movie list.

Go watch it!

Until next time, happy reading:)
