Pilgrim’s Progress: Vanity Fair

·

Let’s get back into the Pilgrim’s Progress and see what happens next in Christian’s journey…

Christian and his companion Faithful made it to a city called Vanity, where a never ending fair was being held.

As soon as they’d walked into the fair they were bombarded with questions and taunts from the residents of Vanity Fair, because Christian and Faithful looked and talked much different than them.

So-Called Judgement

The Vanity Fair people arrested the two pilgrims and took them to what they call a ‘fair trial’.

The Judge called two witnesses to come testify what the accused (aka Christian and Faithful) did wrong.

“They have no regard for Beezlebub,” said Envy.

“They are very pestilent fellows,” said Superstition.

“They spoke things that ought not to be spoke,” said Pickthank.

Faithful’s Last Stand

Then Faithful told them about the King’s Path and how they had refused to buy anything because Vanity Fair didn’t sell what they seek. He shared how Beezlebub/Apollyon/Satan is a false king. He told them how peace and joy can only be found and held in the heart.

The judge and jury didn’t like that, so they punished the pilgrims.

Faithful, trusting his King, was killed. A chariot was waiting for him. It took him up to heaven with a blast of a thousand trumpets.

A Friend?

Christian was put into jail until the next day, when he would be killed.

But one of the residents of Vanity, a man named Hopeful, escaped with Christian in pursuit of the King and the Celestial City.

Though Faithful was lost in the process, Christian was able to safely leave Vanity with a new friend.

Being Equipped

Just like Faithful was able to give his testimony and share the good news of his King, we should always be ready to give our story of faith to anyone willing to hear it.

Being equipped and ready to share God’s love is important. We live to tell others about Him.

I hope you found this post helpful and/or encouraging. Stay tuned for more Pilgrim Progress posts and until then, happy reading.
