I said that the last post was the last of our Pilgrim’s Progress posts, but really, I have to write a quick overall review of it.
So, let’s give one final look into Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan.
My Rating
I’d give this book a 4/5 stars.
It’s a really pure, interesting, heavy story of truth. It’s an allegory, so everything comes back to the Bible and to the life of a christian, and of course it’s not, like, a fictional, funny action story.
For what it is, it was SO GOOD.
The only reason I’m not giving it 5/5 stars is because the Old English was frustrating for me and honestly confused me so much at times that I wanted to stop reading all together.
However, I thought this book was super insightful. I’ll probably end up reading it again someday.
Favorite Part
My favorite part about reading Pilgrim’s Progress wasn’t a singular scene or certain conversation.
My favorite part was seeing how well John Bunyan drew back on his experiences as a christian. The names he gives to his characters, like Worldly Wiseman, were things he struggled with.
Along with the real-life PROBLEMS, there were real-life encouragers. Like Discretion, Piety, Prudence, and Charity, the daughters at the Palace Beautiful. We recognize that these people, or attributes in our life, are a blessing to us, just like they were to Christian.
So…
In a word, this book was HEAVY.
I have to admit that I got tired of it, and found myself skimming most paragraphs, and it was somewhat difficult to understand.
But I’m glad I read it.
I encourage you to read it, think about it, and see what you learn from it. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Also to check out Christiana’s Journey, part two of Pilgrim’s Progress*.
(*disclaimer: I’m not going to read it, at least not yet hehe)
Good bye, Pilgrim’s Progress!!
Happy reading!
