Lord of the Rings: More Characters

·

In my last post, I shared a review of the second Lotr movie: The Two Towers. But today I’m going to look at a few of my favorite characters in this film…let’s get started!

Gimli

First up we have the best (and practically only) dwarf! Gimli is a surprisingly important character in this movie, especially later on.

He’s an excellent fighter with a roughness that gets him through some painful fights.

Besides that, he’s a great individual. Confident, cheerful, loud, and fiercely loyal to his friends.

He’s somewhat friends with Legolas, mostly because he thinks Legolas is too elegant, too prissy. He likes to tease the elf–even when Legolas is actually in the superior position.

Legolas takes it all in stride and resigns himself to competing and bantering with the short, messy fellow, who ultimately brings much cheer and laughter to his comrades.

Pippin and Merry

Pippin and Merry are definitely the most lovable characters. They aren’t very smart (Pippin accidentally almost kills the entire fellowship several times) but they are so innocently mischievous and fun loving that it’s hard not to love them.

“Pip, you’re taller.”

“Right…where are we going?”

“Well, that’s good news.”

“It comes in pints? I’m getting one!”

The best part of The Two Towers were the scenes with Pippin and Merry. Their “who’s taller” arguments, Pippin’s impossible optimism, Merry’s attempt at practicality, and their goofy, close friendship.

I think I especially like them because they have such light, simple minds. Not in a bad way.

They just have this innocence, desire to do right, devotion to their friends…yet they also know how to take time to take care of themselves.

The Ents

Let’s face it–without these massive trees, there might not be a Middle-Earth.

Thanks to Pippin and Merry, who convinced them, the Ents destroyed Saruman’s headquarters and became a huge asset to the people of Middle-Earth.

I like the big Ent that rescued Pippin and Merry. He was fatherly and kind, slow and calm. If it wasn’t for them, Saruman might have prevailed and destroyed Middle-Earth.

Eowyn

The beautiful princess with a desire to fight and be known as equal to the men, who knows she is capable of taking care of herself on the battle field.

So I’m not the biggest fan of Eowyn. Mostly because I feel like, especially compared to Arwen, she’s somewhat of a wannabe and kind of annoying. She almost reminds me of myself.

However, she is an important character and there are a few things I admire about her. Like her confidence and quiet, bold spirit. And she is a skilled sword fighter.

She also is very kind to Gimli and the hobbits, because I think she knows how it feels to be underestimated. When Pippin leaves with Gandalf in The Return of the King, Merry tries to go into battle. Eowyn helps him, letting him ride with her and giving him advice on his armor and sword.

In conclusion, I’d say Eowyn is a talented but overrated character. She can be too impulsive and proud sometimes and has trouble maintaining a controlled manner.

These five characters are some of the best in the movie. I love all of them, and they all contribute much to the films and storyline.

Until next time, happy reading!!
